Question: Can i develop a food allergy after 18 years of being fine?
(Posted by: Bailey on 2010-02-07 16:27:21)
Over the last few months, every time i eat shrimp (which is the only shellfish i like) i get almost asthmatic- like breathing (i have exercise induced asthma) and my throat get kinda itchy on the inside, which my mom says sounds like a allergy. but i'm 18, and have never had a problem before, so could this just randomly develop? and should i do anything about it except for avoiding shellfish? also, will it ever go away? i kinda like shrimp a lot :'( thanks! |

Yes, its very possible to develop new allergies. About every 7 years, your body changes. So it is a possibility that your body has developed an allergy to shellfish. |

Yes. The more you are exposed, the more severe your symptoms will become. Allergies are not something to mess with. You could die. I would stay far from shrimp from now on. Don't even taste it. Have benedryl and an epinephrine pen handy if you do. |

Yes, an allergy can develop at any age. Best to stay away from suspected allergens. |

OH Yes...I didn't develop my 30 Pages of Food Allergies until I hit 30...There is no age limit to "suddenly " developing a food allergy. Sorry, but you will need to avoid it. Per your description, I would say you are at a level 2, or 3...it is not wise for you to continue eating it. |
